Question and Answers
Mater Dei Latin Mass Community
|
Question 1: Is everything at Mater Dei's Tridentine Mass said
in Latin or are parts of the Mass in English?
Answer: Most of the Mass is in Latin (with the exception
of the
Kyrie eleison which is Greek). On Sundays and at certain
Feast Days the Epistle and Gospel reading will be repeated in English,
but they are first read aloud in Latin. The homily is in English. The
Leonine Prayers after the Mass are also in English.
<>Question 2: Is the Mater Dei Latin Mass Community in
good
standing
with the official hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church?
Answer: YES! . Our present
Bishop
Kevin Joseph Farrell also supports the Indult Latin Mass and
has given us our own Church It
also meets the requirements of an
Extraordinary Mass
<>
Question 3. Where are the Masses in the Dallas / Fort Worth
Metropolitan area?
Answer. See the Schedule web page
of the Mater Dei Latin Mass Community.
Question 4: How old is the Mater Dei Latin Mass Community?
Answer: The Mater Dei Latin Mass Community was established as an
Indult Mass location in
the Summer of 1991, when the Priestly
Fraternity of St. Peter first came to Dallas at the invitation of
Bishop Charles Victor Grahman. Before moving to Irving the Latin
Mass were held in Dallas at Christ the King Church, at St. Thomas
Aquinas Church, at St. Jude's Chapel and at the Carmelite Sister'
Chapel.
Question 5: Which Feast Days do you celebrate?
Answer: During the last several centuries, Feast Days have been
added, moved, or deleted by the Catholic Church from the Catholic
Liturgical
Calendar. The Mater Dei Latin Mass Community celebrates those specified
by the 1962 Missal (Where there exists an option, the selection
is made by our local Chaplain) usually at the regular scheduled
day. The Mass time might be changed on some Feast day as
indicated on the Schedule web page..
Question 6. What is the appropriate dress code for the
Mass or visits to the Church / Chapel?
Answer: Remember that
you are in the House of the Lord. Your
clothing should not be a distraction (exposure, style or color) to the
Priest or other members of
the congregation. Consider the view by the Priest (and others) as
you kneel
for Communion.
It is suggested that your shoulders and the upper part of your arms be
covered. Similarly the clothing should cover the
knees. Veils are optional at the Mater Dei Latin Mass Community..
Question 7: What is the difference between the various Latin
Mass Missals?
Answer: The basic Latin Mass has been unchanged for centuries.
As
the Catholic Church changed its Feast Days (see question 5), the
Missals
printed in that year would reflect these changes. In addition the
various
Missals are arranged somewhat differently according to the desires of
the
author and/or publishers. The differences could be the page
layout,
and whether both the Latin and English translation are shown for
everything.
Also some Missals cover only the Mass of Sunday and other Holy Days of
Obligation. Your selection may be a matter of personal need or
availability.
Question 8: Where can I buy a 1962 Latin Mass Missal?
Answer: Ideally you would like to have a 1962 Missal,
however, these were very hard to find. The only ones that are sometimes
available are used/second hand. The publishers, who had the rights to
this
version, sometimes do not want or cannot reprint them. However,
lately a
couple of publishers have re-issued
the 1962 Missal.
Question 9:. Should I buy a Latin Mass Missal that was
written
after 1962?
Answer: No! If it is a reprint of an earlier version, then
the Latin Mass Missal should be all right. We do not recommend that you
buy a Missal older than 1955 because Holy Week readings etc. were
completely
reformed.
Question 10: Do you know of any new/re-print Latin
Mass
Missals that are available
Answer: Yes. I can recommend the following:
- "Roman Catholic Daily Missal 1962" (published by Angelus
Press, 2915 Forest Ave., Kansas City, MO 64109) .
- "The Saint Andrew Daily Missal" by Dom Gaspar Lefebvre OSB
(published
by
St. Benaventure Publications, Great Falls Montana) has been re-issued
and
is also available in various Catholic shops. It has the same
information
as the one listed above and all parts of the Mass are in both
English
and Latin. It also includes the Vespers for Sundays and Feasts
and
Kyriale. It is basically a 1945 edition (see answers to question
8, but it might fit your needs because of the additional information).
- "Roman Catholic Daily Missal 1962" (Published by Baronius
Press, PO Box 47611, London SE4 IWJ, United Kingdom). Just of the
Press, soon to be available in the USA.
- "The New Marian Missal for Daily Mass" by Sylvester
P.
Juergens
S.M. (published by Veritas Press, Los Angeles) has been re-issued and
is
available in various Catholic shops. It has the text of the common
parts
of the Mass in Latin and English on facing pages. It also has the
appropriate
daily prayers and readings of the Introit [Latin & English],
Collect
[English only], Epistle [E], Gradual [LE], Tract [LE], Gospel [E],
Offertory
[LE], Secret [E], Communion [LE] and Post communion [E] for the
Sundays,
Holy Days and all Feast Days as of 1958. This is only slightly
different
from the 1962 Missal (see above question regarding Feast Days). Many of
our members use this 1958 Missal.
- The Saint Joseph Daily Missal (published
by
St. Benaventure Publications, Great Falls Montana) has been re-issued
and
is also available in various Catholic shops.
- "The Father Lasance Roman Missal", 1945 version, published by
Christian
Book Club of America, PO 900566, Palmdale, CA 93590 in a 1993 reprint
(see
comments about above book).
- A "Latin English Booklet Missal for Praying the Traditional Mass"
(published
by the Coalition in Support of Ecclesia Dei, PO Box 2071, Glenview,
Illinois,
60025-6071) is also available in various Catholic shops. It has the
Latin
and English text on facing pages, but it does not have the appropriate
Sunday or daily readings. Many of our members use this booklet.
If you know of any other Missals available, notify this web master.
Question 11: Can I find the Latin and the English
translation
of the Latin Mass on the Internet?
Answer: Yes, Here are some locations that you might
investigate
(note; the prayers, the epistle and the gospel for each specific
day are not included):
Questin 12 : How accurate is the information listed on the
Inernet conserning Latin Mass locations and schedules?
Answer: When initally published, the data on any web page
is as accurate as the author's input. Many web pages are
never revised/updated. Eventhough some pages are updated,
sometimes the obsolute data is not deleted. Since many
people consult our web pages , we try to be as accurate as possible
(especially on Mass times and schedules in the USA and Canada).
If you know of any omissions, additional data, cancellations or
changes, please notify this webmaster by e-mail at: carlsch@airmail.net
and we will make appropriate changes in our website. In order
that we can locate the item please include the webpage, your
recommended changes/additions/deletion along with your source.
Question 13:How often are the various web
pages
on the Mater Dei webpages updated?
Answer: When significant data needs to be added,
deleted or
changed, then the web page is updated. The last update date is
shown in the upper left block at the top of the page.
Typographical corrections may be made without changing of the revision
date. Some pages (such as those listing Church locations) will be
updated quit often because the available information from various
sources is continuously changing and we want to keep these pages
up-to-date. Other pages may rarely be changed or not require any
changes since they were originally published. Your
suggestions/comments on any page are welcome (see next question for
address).

do I contact
the
