THE ROMAN MARTYROLOGY

The Twelfth Day of September

  1. The Feast of the Most Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which Pope Innocent XI commanded should be celebrated by reason of the famous victory obtained over the Turks at Vienna in Austria by the help of the Blessed Virgin.
  2. In Bithynia, St. Autonomus, Bishop and Martyr, who came thither from Italy to escape the persecution of Diocletian: and after he had converted very many souls to the faith, he was slain by the angry heathen at the altar while celebrating the holy Mysteries, and so became himself a victim of Christ.
  3. At Iconium in Lycaonia, St. Curonotus, Bishop, who was beheaded, under the governor Perennius, and received the palm of martyrdom.
  4. At Alexandria, the birthday of the holy martyrs Hieronides, Leon-tius, Serapion, Silesius, Valerian and Strato, who were drowned in the sea under the Emperor Maximian for confessing the name of Christ.
  5. At Meros in Phrygia, the passion of the holy martyrs Macedonius, Theodulus and Tatian, who, under Julian the Apostate, after other torments, were placed upon burning iron grids by AImachius the governor, and rejoicing fulfilled martyrdom.
  6. At Pavia, St. Juventius, Bishop, of whom mention is made on February 8. He was sent to that city, together with St. Syrus (whose memory is recalled on December 9) by blessed Hermagoras, a disciple of St. Mark the Evangelist; and both preached Christ's Gospel there and were distinguished by great virtues and miracles. They also enlightened the neighbouring cities by their labours for God and thus rested in peace by a glorious death, honoured as bishops.
  7. At Lyons in France, the burial of St. Serdon, Bishop.
  8. At Verona, St. Silvinus, Bishop.
  9. At Anderlecht, near Brussels in Belgium, St. Guido, Confessor.

And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors and holy virgins. Thanks be to God.
