THE ROMAN MARTYROLOGY
The Eighth Day of October
- St. Bridget, widow. Her birthday is observed on July 23, and the translation of her holy body
on October 7.
- The holy martyrs Sergius, Bacchus, Marcellus and Apuleius whose birthday is recorded on the
previous day.
- On the same day, the birthday of blessed Simeon, the old man, who, as is related in the
Gospel, took the Lord Jesus in his arms and pro-phesied about Him, when He was presented
in the temple.
- At Laodicea in Phrygia, St. Artemon, Priest, who received the crown of martyrdom by fire in
the reign of the Emperor Diocletian.
- At Thessalonica, St. Demetrius, a proconsul, who, after he had brought many to Christ's faith,
suffered martyrdom, being pierced with spears by command of the Emperor Maximian.
- In the same place, St. Nestor, Martyr.
- At Seville in Spain, St. Peter, Martyr.
- At Caesarea in Palestine, the passion of St. Reparata, Virgin and Martyr, who for refusing to
sacrifice to idols was afflicted with various kinds of torments, and finally smitten with the
sword, under the Emperor Decius. Her soul was seen to go forth from her body and to ascend
to heaven in the form of a dove.
- In the district of Laon, St. Benedicta, Virgin and Martyr.
- At Ancona, SS. Palatias and Laurentia, who were sent into exile during Diocletian's
persecution under the governor Dion and were overcome by labours and hardships.
- At Rouen, St. Evodius, Bishop and Confessor.
- At Jerusalem, St. Pelagia, called the Penitent.
And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors and holy virgins. Thanks be to God.
