THE ROMAN MARTYROLOGY

The Fourth Day of October

  1. At Assisi in Umbria, the birthday of St. Francis, Deacon and Confessor; he was the Founder of three Orders, namely the Friars Minor, the Poor Clares and the Brothers and Sisters of Penance. St. Bonaventure wrote his Life, rich in sanctity and miracles.
  2. At Corinth, the birthday of SS. Crispus and Caius, whom St. Paul the Apostle mentions in writing to the Corinthians.
  3. At Athens, St. Hierotheus, a disciple of blessed Paul the Apostle.
  4. At Damascus, St. Peter, Bishop and Martyr, who was accused before the Prince of the Agarenes of teaching the faith of Christ. And so his tongue, hands and feet were cut off, and he consummate martyrdom by crucifixion.
  5. At Alexandria, the holy priests and deacons Caius, Faustus, Euse-bius, Chaeremon, Lucius and their companions; some of these were made martyrs in the persecution of Valerian, while others by serving the martyrs merited the reward of martyrdom.
  6. In Egypt, the holy martyrs Mark and Marcian, brothers, and almost innumerable others of either sex and every age. Some of these, after scourging, others after horrible tortures of various kinds, were com-mitted to the flames, others cast into the sea, some beaten on the head, many consumed by hunger, others fixed to gibbets, some of them even with their heads downward and their feet raised up on high. They merited a most blessed crown of martyrdom.
  7. At Bologna, St. Petronius, Bishop and Confessor, who was re-nowned for doctrine, miracles and holiness.
  8. At Paris, St. Aurea, Virgin.

And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors and holy virgins. Thanks be to God.
