THE ROMAN MARTYROLOGY
The Tenth Day of October
- St. Francis Borgia, Confessor, Priest of the Society of Jesus, whose birthday is noted on
September 30.
- Near Ceuta in Morocco, the passion of the seven holy martyrs of the Order of Friars Minor,
namely, Daniel, Samuel, Angelus, Leo, Nicholas, Ugolino and Domnus, all of whom were
priests except Domnus. There they suffered insults, bonds and stripes from the Saracens
because they preached the Gospel and put to silence the sect of Mahomet; finally, they were
beheaded and thus obtained the palm of martyrdom.
- At Cologne, St. Gereon, Martyr, with 318 others, who, in the per-secution of Maximian
patiently laid their necks on the block for the true re1igion.
- In the neighbourhood of the same city, SS. Victor and his com-panions, Martyrs.
- At Bonn in Germany, the holy martyrs Cassius and Florentius, with many others.
- At Nicomedia, the holy martyrs Eulampius and Eulampia, a Virgin, his sister, who, on hearing
that her brother was being tortured for Christ's sake, leapt forth into the midst of the multitude,
and, em-bracing him, joined him as his companion. Both, after being cast into a vessel of
boiling oil and in no wise hurt, fulfilled martyrdom by beheading, together with 200 others who,
moved by that miracle, had found faith in Christ
- In the island of Crete, blessed Pinytus, most noble of bishops, who flourished as bishop in the
city of Gnosia, under Marcus Antoninus Verus and Lucius Aurelius Commodus, and left in his
writings as in a mirror the living image of himself
- At York in England, St. Paulinus, Bishop, a disciple of blessed Pope Gregory, who sent him
thither with others to preach the Gospel. He converted King Edwin and his people to the
Christian faith.
- At Piombino in Tuscany, St. Cerbonius, Bishop and Confessor who, as St. Gregory relates,
was famous for his miracles both in lift and death.
- At Verona, St. Cerbonius, Bishop.
- At Capua, St. Paulinus, Bishop.
And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors and holy virgins. Thanks be to God.
