THE ROMAN MARTYROLOGY
The Second Day of October
- The Feast of the Holy Angel Guardians.
- At Rome, the passion of St. Modestus, a Sardinian, Deacon and Martyr; he was racked and
burnt with fire by the Emperor Diocletian. His holy body was later translated to Benevento and
buried in a church named after him.
- In the district of Arras, the passion of blessed Léger, Bishop of Autun, who was tormented
with various insults and punishments for the truths sake, and slain by Ebroin, the mayor of the
palace to Thierry.
- At Nicomedia, St. Eleutherius, soldier and Martyr, with innumerable others; when the palace
of Diocletian was burned down, they were falsely accused of this crime, and at the command
of this most cruel emperor were brutally slain in groups. Some of them were beheaded by the
sword, others burnt with fire, others cast into the sea; but the first of them, Eleutherius, after
being tortured for a long time, became stronger through his torments and, as gold tried in the
fire, ended his victory by martyrdom.
- At Antioch, the holy martyrs Primus, Cyril and Secundarius.
- On the same day, St.. Gerin, Martyr; he was the brother of blessed Léger, the Bishop of
Autun, and by order of Ebroinus he was stoned to death.
- At Constantinople, St. Theophilus, monk, who was most cruelly scourged by Leo the Isaurian
for defending the veneration of holy images, and driven into exile where he passed to the Lord.
And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors and holy virgins. Thanks be to God.
